Echoes in Paper: Perfection and Imperfection_Poster 2, Xiyue Luo, 2025
This project will explore the theme of “the copy” through Chinese traditional paper-cutting. The inspiration for this project comes from the works of Ku Shulan, a master of China Folk Art and Crafts.
The mirror-symmetrical beauty inherent in traditional Chinese paper-cutting echoes the concept of the copy, which is a type of mirrored copy. Besides, the rise of digital design tools nowadays has enabled many arts, including paper-cutting, to be realized in a more convenient digital form, and has made the patterns of paper-cutting present exquisite and perfect characteristics and beauty, giving traditional paper-cutting new possibilities. However, at the same time, the natural flaws and imperfect textures produced by handicrafts, as a form of artistic expression, cannot be ignored or replaced. Therefore, this project will also present the differences between handicrafts and digital forms through handmade paper-cuts as the copy and digital designs as the original.
In the graphic design outcome, this project will design a booklet to showcase the design of paper-cutting patterns and the contrast between handcrafted and digital designs. Three series of posters and nine postcards will also be created to display the aesthetic of mirrored copy of paper-cutting and the combinations of pattern components.
