Hi, my name is Leon! An international student from China.
As a graphic design student, I keep exploring the possibility of typography while challenging the conventional design through experimentation with AR and coding, extending the boundaries of design. For the production, I prefer printed-outs, as they offer me a sense of fulfillment and allow me to understand the differences between digital outcomes and printed outcomes:).
Here are some ideas about my final project:
Based on the concept of ‘A Copy of A Copy’, this project designed a zine series that consists of reproduction of renowned artists’ works (including photography works, posters, screenprints, sculpture etc.), remaking them based on my own interpretation, questioning what can we build or create based on the ‘original’, and is it still a ‘copy’ if we blend it with our own interpretations and ideas.
‘A Copy of A Copy: Typography’ copies the highlights in graphic design by reproducing them based on my own thoughts while adding relevant elements and visual concepts. It is not only a reproduction of graphic design works but also a revival and replay of classic designs in modern society.
‘A Copy of A Copy: NGV’ shows a series of reproduced images of various artworks in the NGV, they have been copied into this book through photography (images I took) and then remade through photoshop and photomontage processes to create interesting composition as well as visual impact. By combining photography and graphic design, the possibilities of design have been extended further, as photography supplies a rich palette of real-world texture, mood, and storytelling that graphic design can’t create alone.
‘A Copy of A Copy Scan & AI’ explores the scanning technique and how the original work's ideas and concepts can be altered through the process of scanning. Meanwhile, influenced by the trend of using AI in the design industry and to explore the idea of 'copy' further, I will remake these scans through AI, observing how AI will change the idea and design of the copied piece.
