Performance Design Studio - Eurydice Design Proposal by Kai Losey
The world of Eurydice is transformative and poetic. This design aims to capture the transient nature through a versatile stage which moves and breathes through the movements of the play. What at first appears to be an empty stage evolves through the gesture of choreographed lifts to reveal nostalgic and whimsical evocations that paradoxically feel both timeless and of a time past. The equivocal shifting of location and space, jumping between worlds, is visually emulated in the adaptability of the space, combined with lighting dramaturgically sculpting the narrative, presents the audience with a duality of intimacy and expanse. It is through this space that lives and breathes in tandem with the characters that I reflect on the themes of memory and connection, how we choose to experience the world around us, “as above, so below”.

This award-winning piece speaks to the application of theory and knowledge gained throughout my experience of the Performance Design major in VCA.
The exploration of rain represented on stage by 21 bodies in motion, liquid organza costumes, and a restrained lighting palette culminated in a work that pushed my artistic boundaries and spoke deeply to audience members.

Kai Losey is a multidisciplinary artist interested in all elements of design within the realm of production. He integrates design skills of sound, lighting, costume, and set into his choreography practice culminating in works that feel complete and cohesive. His versatility as a artist allows him to adapt his design sense to whatever area is required and his plethora of creative skills from music remixing, wire sculpting, pattern making, sewing, 3d modelling, to recently laser cutting provide him the ability to bring his unique perspective to any artistic endeavour.
