False Clarity, Stop-motion animation, 2025
This video is a simple stop-motion animation. It tells the story of four wooden figures who tried every possible way to get out of the cave. When they noticed a shadow appearing on the barrier, they thought there were real people outside coming to help them. After they realized that the shadows were fake, they gradually stopped the imitation behavior and continued to think about ways to escape, while reflecting on the authenticity of their existence.

False Clarity, Poster, 2025
Inspired by Plato's Allegory of the Cave in The Republic, it occurred to me that what we perceive or experience may well be mere "copies" rather than the original "truth".
My project explores the idea of shadow as a copy of reality. This project will consist of an installation, a video and several posters.
The installation was completed by hanging wooden figures, semi-transparent frosted plastic sheets and posters in front of the lights. When wind or movement occurs, the plastic shifts slightly, causing the shadows to blur and distort. This installation reflects how we never truly see the “original” — only its shadow, translation, or echo. By showing the shadow and the wooden figures behind, the project invites viewers to question what they are actually
perceiving.
This set of posters consists of five pieces. Each poster features a back- ground of wooden figures, with more distinctive starting and ending poses in the video.

Jingyan Chen, a Bachelor of Design student from the University of Melbourne, majored in Graphic Design and Performance Design. She specialised in branding, typography, and graphic design and illustration.
She often showed great interest in the relationship between perception and reality. She was dedicated to integrating design into daily life. During her time at VCA, she refined her skills in various aspects, including modelling, graphic design, and performance design.
Her works are diverse, usually showing a strong interest in minimalist aesthetics and spatial hierarchy. Through changes in visual layers, she expresses abstract concepts. She hopes that when viewers look at her works, they not only "see", but are also guided to think about how we see and whether what we see is real.
