Ghosts on the horizon, digital generative design and vinyl record (TouchDesigner), 2025
This work explores the relationship between sound and form through visualized frequencies. The design originates from a TouchDesigner generative system that maps audio waves into spatial visual patterns. The monochromatic tone and waveform texture reflect the concept of resonance and the ephemerality of sound. This project connects to my broader practice of translating sound data into visual experiences, merging graphic design with digital media experimentation.
Deposit, digital generative design and vinyl record (TouchDesigner), 2025
Deposit continues the exploration of sound as a visual material. This work examines how digital systems can archive, distort, and re-deposit sonic data into new graphic forms. Built with TouchDesigner, the generative composition visualizes layered frequency fields, evoking the sedimentation of memory and sound. Conceptually, it extends my ongoing inquiry into “the copy” — how repetition, translation, and reproduction generate new material realities within graphic design practice.
Tracefield, digital generative design and vinyl record (TouchDesigner), 2025
Tracefield visualises the invisible trajectories of sound as a spatial network of traces. The generative pattern emerges from particle systems reacting to low-frequency audio input, creating constellations of noise and resonance. It marks the culmination of the Ghosts of Frequency series, merging motion, sound, and graphic systems into a cohesive visual field.
Adirft at Sound_, digital generative design and vinyl record (TouchDesigner), 2025
This design captures temporal density — Adirft at Sound_ condensed into a single visual frame. Generated through real-time audio data in TouchDesigner, the luminous streaks represent fluctuating sound amplitudes and the passage of time. It reflects my ongoing inquiry into how sound, time, and repetition can become visual languages within graphic design.
Illusion, digital generative design and vinyl record (TouchDesigner), 2025
Deposit continues my exploration into sound visualisation and the translation of frequency data into geometric abstraction. Using TouchDesigner, this piece visualises the layering and compression of sonic data as interwoven structures, referencing the accumulation of digital residue. It connects to my broader practice on reproduction, sound, and the aesthetics of data transformation.
I’m Jiaqi Yin, a third-year Bachelor of Design (Graphic Design) student at the University of Melbourne. My practice explores the intersection between sound, visual systems, and digital reproduction. I often work with generative tools and Ableton Live to transform audio data into visual compositions.
Through projects like Ghosts of Frequency, I investigate how sound, repetition, and algorithmic translation can produce new forms of materiality and meaning. My design approach is both conceptual and experimental—bridging theory and technology to create immersive, data-driven visual experiences.
